Infrastructure Development of Port of Al-Faw: A Gateway to Global Trade

The Port of Al-Faw, located on the Al-Faw Peninsula in Basra, Iraq, is rapidly emerging as a cornerstone of Iraq's economic renaissance and a pivotal hub for international trade. As of 2025, this state-of-the-art deep-water port is nearing completion, showcasing Iraq's ambitious vision for infrastructure development and economic diversification. This article explores the current status, key infrastructure components, and strategic importance of the Port of Al-Faw's development.

Current Status and Progress

The Al-Faw Grand Port project is making significant strides towards its operational phase, with several key components nearing completion. The first phase of the project is set to begin operations in 2025, boasting a container terminal capacity of 3 million TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units).

As of early 2025, the project has achieved remarkable progress.

  1. The first five berths are fully completed and ready for operation.
  2. The submerged tunnel, a crucial part of the port's connectivity, is 58.47% complete.
  3. The navigation channel has reached 77.41% completion.
  4. The container yard is 88% complete, ensuring efficient cargo handling.
  5. The breakwater and port entrance are fully completed, providing essential protection and accessibility.

Key Infrastructure Components

Berths

The master plan for the Port of Al-Faw includes a total of 99 berths, to be developed in phases. The first phase, currently under implementation, comprises five initial berths designed to handle a wide range of goods, including oil, gas, foodstuffs, and chemicals.

Breakwaters

One of the most impressive features of the Port of Al-Faw is its breakwaters, recognized as the world's longest at 14.523 kilometers. These massive structures, constructed by a consortium including Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd (South Korea), GCPI (Iraq), and TECHNITAL (Italy), are crucial for protecting the port from harsh sea conditions and ensuring safe vessel operations.

Container Terminals

The port's container terminals are designed to accommodate the new generation of container ships. With quays at a depth of -17.5 meters, the port can handle large container vessels efficiently. The first phase includes a container terminal with a capacity of 3 million TEU, set to begin operations in 2025.

Supporting Infrastructure

In addition to maritime facilities, the port development includes comprehensive logistics and supporting infrastructure. A 57.9-kilometer road connecting the port to Um Qasr is nearing completion, with a 92% progress rate. This road network is vital for efficient cargo distribution and hinterland connectivity.
